Amazingness

I can’t saw much positive about my workday, but the four hours since then have been packed with awesomeness. Here’s what happened:

  • Went to the last half of a baseball game on a $2 ticket
  • Discovered a new bar by my place carries Schlafly Kolsch (bottles)
  • Found out the same bar has a raw bar and $1 oysters from 10:30 p.m. to midnight five days a week
  • Met a guy from Silver Spring sitting on one side of me at the bar
  • Met a gentleman who graduated from Mizzou in the ’70s sitting on the other side of me at the bar

Pretty good for a random Tuesday night!

Pancakes and beer

Not together, of course.

I’ve always made pancakes from a mix, but recently someone mentioned they always make pancakes form scratch … to which I thought, “Why am I not making them from scratch?” So, I looked up a recipe online and made them from scratch. It took twice the time as adding water to a mix (so four minutes instead of two), and they were delicious.

The recipe I used is here. If anyone has a favorite pancake recipe to share, let me know.

The beer is from earlier this week. I went to my favorite beer bar, Churchkey, and drank a Barrel-Aged Mama’s Little Yella Pils by Oskar Blues. It’s a pilsner aged in port wine barrels for five months (or so). It had great flavors and was definitely something I can’t find just anywhere.

Also, Churchkey had a nice compliment for Schalfly in this tweet from yesterday:

NEW DRAFT: Schlafly American IPA: We can’t get enough of this fantastic brew…balanced malt w/ tingly pine flavors and apricot aromas

I’d prefer if they had the Kolsch again, but at least Schlafly is getting some nice recognition!

Baltimore visit

I had never been to Baltimore (besides the airport), so I decided to take a day and check it out a couple weekends ago. My friends Emily, Joe and Alissa came along.

We spent a lot of time around the Inner Harbor, walking around and riding in a paddleboat. Then we took a short trek through part of Little Italy, and we ended up at a great beer bar in Fells Point. (My friend had suggested the bar, so it was on my list of places we had to go.) We also visited Fort McHenry (where the battle and flag that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner was).

This restaurant in Little Italy was very cute. One of the painted doorways on the side says “Bocce Cafe.”

We had lunch and beer at Max’s Taphouse in Fell’s Point. On our walk back, we passed these really cute rowhouses with little cellars. I had a Mikkeller Drink in the Sun (hoppy summer ale) and a saison (I can’t remember which one). (Actually I had only half glasses of each since we were spending all day in the sun.)

The flag being lowered at Fort McHenry. It flies the 15-star flag, which is what was flying during the battle from the War of 1812. They were switching it out for a smaller version of the flag. It’s a bit confusing, but they seem to change sizes based on weather conditions as the size that flew during the battle is very large and can be unruly. Also, each time the country has a new flag (49 stars, 50 stars, etc.), the new flag flies at Fort McHenry before anywhere else.

Pretty nice view from the fort.

This ’80s sand sculpture was in Inner Harbor. Mario!

World Cup

I’m a bit behind on posts about my activities, so I hope to catch up this week — before my next set of adventures happens.

Even though I barely (or not at all) understand soccer, I met a friend at Churchkey to watch the U.S. lose to Ghana in the World Cup. It’s definitely fun to watch the games in a bar full of people who are excited about it. And it was also great that I was at Churchkey, which might now be my favorite bar. Such good beer! And all the bartenders are really helpful (and mostly male).

I can’t remember exactly what I drank since that was now weeks ago, but I did have a saison cask ale. (I think it was Stateside Saison from Maryland, but I’m not sure anymore.) I also drank an Italian lager (not Peroni, not Moretti, but I can’t remember what it was) and something else that I cannot recall.

We left as soon as the game ended and hopped across the street to check out Ghana Cafe. It was packed with people dancing and cheering and running down the sidewalk screaming. Pretty neat to see.

STL night in D.C. (aka Kolsch success!!!)

Last night was amazing. I went to the Big Hunt — and had Schlafly Kolsch on tap! AND watched the Cardinals beat the Mariners while I was there. Plus, I met someone from St. Louis who has relatives in Southern Illinois.

But back to the important part: the Kolsch. This is the bar that had a Schlafly event last week, yet somehow it hadn’t occurred to me that they might still have Schlafly. When I did discover it over the weekend, I planned to go Sunday (already had Saturday night plans), but I was too lazy to trek over on Sunday. But I did call to verify they still had the beer, and I went after work last night.

I braved a torrential downpour from the Metro to the bar (a block or two, which resulted in me being soaked despite my umbrella). The Cardinals were on TV, so I drank my Kolsch and watched the Cardinals play in St. Louis. That’s also when I learned about the apparent decision of Texas, etc., to remain in the Big 12.

A very eventful night.

The second missed Schlafly Kolsch

Schlafly really needs to alert me when its visiting D.C. (And I checked the site, but they appear to only advertise St. Louis events there. This is a problem they should fix.)

I was at work today when I saw this post about Dan Kopman being at The Big Hunt tonight for a Schlafly tasting, which of course included Kolsch. I was ready to go. Except the tasting was 5:30-7:30. And the earliest I would be done with work was 8, meaning it would be about 8:30 before I could be there.

Can they not plan these things around my schedule??? (In case you missed it, I had a similar experience last month.)

Very sad … I spent the rest of the day feeling sorry for myself. All I can hope is that these tastings are signs that these bars will start carrying Kolsch on a regular basis … Please!!

A Billy Goat in D.C. … and still no luck for the Cubs

Last week, I realized the Billy Goat Tavern near my office, which a few co-workers had mentioned, is related to the original one in Chicago. However, upon visiting it Friday, I realized the comments I had found on the Internet were true — the D.C. version is a bit different from the original. Most notably, it’s cleaner and brighter. Lucky for me, it still serves cheap food and beer, plus is very close to work, so I give it a thumbs up.
