Adorable Children

During my Midwest trip in October, I spent about half the time with small children and about half the time drinking. (Just joking, but I did go to homecoming at Mizzou.) Two very different experiences, of course.

Ben (front) and Bekah

The first cute children I saw were in Chatham: Amy and West’s adorable, well-behaved, enthusiastic and not-shy son, Andrew, and Cindy and Nate’s very cute, smart, also well-behaved, sweet and friendly daughter Hannah and their also-adorable 1-year-old twins, Ben and Bekah.

Andrew (left) and Hannah ride the holiday train.

We had a great time. Andrew gave me a tour of his house and introduced me to Annie the dog. We watched some Rugrats and we played some pirate ship. Hannah let me play kick with her and read her bedtime books.

Nolen lines up his trains to watch Thomas on TV.

Then, when I reached Herrin, I saw my 3-year-old nephew, Nolen. He’s a huge Thomas the Tank Engine fan, and he has loads of trains. We built and rebuilt train tracks and moved trains around and watched Thomas videos.

Nolen helps make cupcakes.

We also baked cupcakes. Nolen was very helpful with dumping in ingredients. When it came time to add the flour and chocolate into the wet mixture bit by bit, we had an interesting arrangement. He was scared of the noise made by the hand mixer, so we worked out a deal. He pushed his stool up the counter, climbed up and helped me dump in some flour. Then I said, “Time for the mixer,” and he would run to the other side of the kitchen and sit on Mom’s lap and peer across and watch me mix it. Then, when I turned off the mixer, he’d run back over to help again. Over and back and over and back. He also helped decorate. We were putting in filling and adding frosting, and then he measured out some sprinkles and helped me put them on each one. He called them “Nolen and Sara’s cupcakes.”

Midwest travels

I was in St. Louis last weekend for the annual conference of the Society for News Design.

And this week, I head back to the Midwest for a whirlwind 10 days in Columbia, Mo. (for the 100th anniversary of Homecoming), Chatham, Ill. (to visit friends), Herrin (to see friends and family) and Springfield, Mo. (for a cousin’s wedding).

After that, I’ll be holed up in D.C. until Christmas. (It just happened that all my Midwest travels landed in the same month.)

I can’t wait to see some friends and have some familiar food I can’t find out this way!

Herrin Visit

I visited Herrin over Memorial Day weekend for Herrinfesta Italiana and my 10-year high school reunion. I had a very busy weekend. I spent lots of time at the bocce courts, but that is also a good way to catch up with everyone in Herrin. I saw many, many old friends and Herrinites. Of course, it’s also a little weird because there are people I semi-recognize but no longer really remember since I’ve been gone for 10 years.

“So soft!” Nolen said, even though Snoopy
is made of laminated wood.

I saw even more friends at my reunion, after which we went to Chevie’s bar for the last night before it closed. It was a good weekend!

I also saw Nolen, of course. He’ll be 3 in July. He was happy to let me take his photo. (He played marbles while I shot photos. And if I waited too long between photos, he would tell me to take one, while he said “Cheese! Smile!” (However, he usually didn’t smile as he recited that.)

He also played with an old, wooden dog toy that I had when I was little. I believe it was originally Kevin’s when he was little. I’m surprised it still exists (and moves!), but Nolen enjoyed taking “Snoopy dog” for a walk.

“C’mon, Snoopy dog.”

Christmas in Herrin

Rather than repeating everything here, take a look at my photos and captions on Facebook (public link here) from the holidays.

Weight limit
I had a great time with friends and family. My Christmas presents easily fit in my suitcase until Mom and I spent a couple days shopping after Christmas. In the end, my suitcase weighed 49.2 lbs. (the limit is 50). And I have a small bag of holiday cards for next year (or the next three years, probably) sitting at my parents house for me to pick up sometime before December. (They were 50% off and adorable!)

My aunt and cousin made these adorable aprons as Christmas presents.

Grandparents
My parents bought an inflatable Christmas decoration. But not for the front yard; this one goes on the back deck so that Nolen can see it from the family room. They are definitely grandparents. (Also, Dad now takes long lunches at home and comes home early on days when Mom is watching Nolen. Kevin and I were laughing at how this compares with his late nights of work when we were younger.)

Trains
Nolen is a big fan of trains right now. My dad bought him a Christmas train, which is set up in the living room. The day Nolen was over, we watched that train for at least an hour. (It only goes in a circle on one track.) Nolen uses the remote to start and stop it and to turn on the music. He’s also good at counting the cars.

Nolen and M&Ms

Nolen loves M&Ms.; My mom had a jar of the Christmas variety on the counter with her other decorations. They had been there all month, but Nolen discovered them while I was home. He was about to have a snack of cookies when he saw the M&Ms;, and they overtook his thoughts. He had to have M&Ms;!

So Mom asked him how many he wanted. When he hesitated, she said, “Three?” “Three,” he agreed. (He’s at that age where he’ll repeat anything.) So she counted out three red M&Ms; (his favorite color).

“Green!” he shouted. So she had to count out three green M&Ms;, too. And she gave him some cookies for a little, uh, nutritional value.

Nolen in October

Since I was in Herrin for my dad’s party, I obviously took more photos of Nolen. In fact, I was in Herrin an entire day “hiding” at Kevin and Jennifer’s place before I surprised my dad, so I had ample time for some Nolen shots.

Jennifer left to run a couple errands and grab lunch for us, and Nolen was distraught for a while. Poor guy.

But eventually he calmed down and we played with pumpkins and balls.

Nolen also read his opposites book to me. He has a lot of it memorized and knows which page is which, so he reads the last half all on his own. “Up, down. Awake, asleep.”

For Halloween, Nolen dressed as a knight. We convinced him to wear at least part of his costume for the Trail of Treats downtown. The treats he liked the best? A strand of beads and a juice box.

Kevin learned a lot of parenting skills (such as tickling) from our Uncle Stephen. He also practiced quite a bit with me when he tortured me as a child.

Nolen was thrilled when my dad pulled up a chair at the table for Elmo and showed Nolen how to “feed” Elmo. My mom was less thrilled about the feeding part.

Surprise Herrin Visit

My dad had a significant birthday (yes, 6-0) on Halloween. Months ago, I talked with my mom, brother and sister-in-law about making a surprise visit home in conjunction with a party for him. We ended up going with a small gathering of friends who used to have a trick-or-treat/Pete’s birthday party each Halloween.

The party was a surprise overall, but I think he was especially shocked to see me show up at the door. We had a great time and spent the next day at some Southern Illinois wineries and an SIU basketball game in the new arena.

Midwest trip: Seersucker Thursday

October 15th, 2010 | by | uncategorized

My dad has a seersucker suit that he’s very proud of. Jennifer saw a matching seersucker suit for Nolen, which she bought. They had planned to wear the suits together for an event over the summer, but it didn’t work out. So when I was home, we decided to try to get some photos of them together.

We had toyed with the possibility of getting a professional photo of them shot while we had our family picture taken, but since Nolen had a 30-minute fit before he was ready to cooperate a bit for the family picture, we decided it wasn’t worth trying to get him to change clothes for more photos.

So, instead, Dad came home from work early one day while Nolen was with us, and they both changed into their seersucker suits. Of course, Nolen is a 2-year-old so he still wasn’t wild about posing for pictures. Instead, I followed the two of them around and tried to snap a few decent shots.

It also happened to be raining, so our plan to go outside didn’t work out as well as hoped. However, it did offer Dad a chance to teach Nolen a lesson on wet and dry. Even after they finished, he would stand at the edge and point: “Wet. Dry.”

Midwest trip: Ice cream cone

October 14th, 2010 | by | uncategorized

Nolen ate his first ice cream cone at Italian Village while I was home. My mom had tried to take him to McDonald’s for ice cream previously, but he had no interest in eating it. This time, Jennifer got a cone and left it sitting in front of Nolen. After a bit, he grew interested and started licking it. This continued for a while, with a variety of facial expressions.
