I was in St. Louis last weekend for the annual conference of the Society for News Design.

And this week, I head back to the Midwest for a whirlwind 10 days in Columbia, Mo. (for the 100th anniversary of Homecoming), Chatham, Ill. (to visit friends), Herrin (to see friends and family) and Springfield, Mo. (for a cousin’s wedding).

After that, I’ll be holed up in D.C. until Christmas. (It just happened that all my Midwest travels landed in the same month.)

I can’t wait to see some friends and have some familiar food I can’t find out this way!

A week ago … Columbia

I’m a bit late with this post, but I have to include a nod to my Midwest trip more than a week ago. I went to Columbia, Mo., for a meeting of the alumni committee of which I’m a part. While there, I managed a stops at Harpo’s (to drink lots of Boulevard Wheat), Tiger Spirit (because my 30 Mizzou shirts aren’t enough) and Murry’s (which confirmed why it’s one of my all-time favorite restaurants).

I also made it to Faurot Field to see one Mizzou football game in person this season. Unfortunately, the football team didn’t really show up until the second half, but at least the Tigers won in the end.

My parents came to Columbia at the same time, so I saw them and also visited with a few family friends in the area while I was there.

All-Star bust

My dad mentioned the other night that during my July trip home, I’m scheduled to fly out of St. Louis the morning after the All-Star Game there. How could I be so dumb to schedule my trip in this way? Good question. Since I had been in St. Louis and working at the paper, I knew about the upcoming All-Star Game. I had considered the headaches (or excitement) it could cause if I were still there.

And yet, I completely forgot about it when I scheduled my flights. Oh well. As my dad said, I should make sure to bring my camera to the airport. Who knows who I might run into.
