Miscellaneous weekend

I tried another José Andrés restaurant on Friday. Oyamel was great, even though I had to pull out my laptop to post a story for work as the meal ended. (It’s so much fun to be on call for the website.) I’m still working on reservations to try José Andrés’ much-hyped Minibar.

Saturday night was Riesling wine club. I was very excited to be tasting lots of my favorite variety of wine. We had seven bottles plus pad thai, chicken salad sandwiches, spring rolls, banana bread and pie.

Today I prepared for a crazy week of baking and activity. (I am supposed to bring baked goods to work three days in a row — including for the Congressional Cook-off.) So, I  made a trip to the grocery store to buy lots of baking ingredients. Surprisingly, Giant had absolutely NO cake flour. I don’t normally buy cake flour, but I assumed the store would have at least one brand of it. No luck. So I stopped at Whole Foods later. And that store had only one brand of cake flour (which is enough for me).

I also saw the movie “Eat Pray Love” this afternoon. I loved the book. The movie was pretty good. Obviously, it left out some parts of the book, but it was kind of nice to have a condensed version of the book that lasted only a couple hours. Seeing the movie has made me want to re-read the book, even though I read it just four months ago.

Neapolitan Pizza

A new, Neapolitan pizza place opened in Silver Spring a few weeks ago. I had read many reviews of it and finally had a chance to check it out Friday night.

The service was a bit disappointing. We sat at the bar, and our waitress was working really hard, but she just seemed to have too many people to care for (tables in addition to the bar).

The pizza, however, was great. I had the pizza ‘a capriciosa, which included tomato, mozzarella, sauteed mushrooms, ham, marinated artichokes, black olives and fresh basil. I really liked the crust, thin but a little chewy with a crisp outside. And I had never had artichokes on the pizza, but they worked well. I’m excited to try the quattro formaggi white pizza as well. Perhaps I will finally find something out here to replace my favorite quattro formaggi pizza from The Stable in St. Louis.

According to what I remember from the menu (I couldn’t find this info online), the pizzas are made in the traditional Neapolitan style to get the approval as official Naples pizza.

The menu also includes a number of salads, calzones, paninis and more. Plus, tiramisu, Nutella pizza and gelato for dessert — and espresso options, if you enjoy those.

My dad might be happy to know the retaurant has Peroni on tap (and in bottles) and also bottles of another Italian beer, Moretti. I had a glass of wine off the wine list, which includes a number of Italian wines. (They even have a Sangiovese, so perhaps I know where I’m taking my parents next time they visit.)

I really like the atmosphere of the place, too, except that the shape of the building makes it feel pretty crowded. It’s a narrow strip with a bar along one side and tables along the other side, plus more tables in the back and on the outside patio. Perhaps if I went on a weeknight it would feel less cramped and have speedier service. (I’m hoping the staff figures out how to speed up the service at all times; otherwise, I fear for its future.)

Schlafly in D.C.!

I was SO EXCITED a couple weeks ago when I discovered a great beer bar (check it out — they even have cask ales at all times) in D.C., Churchkey, was having the Schlafly founders at a special event — and serving their beer! Sadly, I was working during the event, but an awesome friend stopped by, drank a Kolsch for me (very selflessly) and gave me the glass. Not only is it a Schlafly glass, it’s a Kolsch glass!  Now I just need to stop by and see if they’ll be serving Schlafly on a regular basis! That would make me one incredibly happy girl!

Two weekends in one

I never updated my blog about last weekend’s happenings, so here goes.

Eastern Market, basketball and National Archives
I met a couple friends at Eastern Market to have breakfast at a very popular place there called Market Lunch. I hadn’t heard much about it, but it’s obviously well-known as the line went down the hall and we waited more than half an hour to order and sit at the small string of stools. My crab cakes benedict, however, were delicious.

Next, we joined a Mizzou watch party at a bar in the Penn Quarter (and watched Mizzou lose).

In an attempt to cheer myself up after that (and because I had time remaining on my parking meter), I made a quick trip to the National Archives. Unfortunately, there was a line, so by the time I got in, I went straight to the rotunda to see the main documents (Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights) and then had to return to my car before I got a ticket.

Ceviche and Champagne
This weekend, I had a drink Friday night at a Silver Spring bar/restaurant called Ceviche — and I actually tried some ceviche while I was there. (From the descriptions I’ve read, it’s basically raw fish marinated in lime juice and other seasonings.) The ceviche was good, but nothing I’m overly crazy about.

On Saturday, the wine club I’m in celebrated Champagne and sparkling wine month (though we didn’t have any real French Champagne). We had quite a few bottles for our wine club brunch, and I ended up staying to hang out with some friends there until the evening. (And then got a ride home.)

I’ve also been watching a good amount of football the last few weekends.

Exploring Silver Spring

I took advantage of the excellent weather today to walk around downtown Silver Spring. First, I visited City Place. It’s an outdoor eating and shopping area that contains most of the chain restaurants around here. I checked out the farmers’ market, which began this weekend, but it wasn’t much compared to the Soulard Market.

Then, I explored Georgia Avenue. I found a couple bars people had mentioned. I also found tons of restaurants of every type: Indian, Thai, Mexican, Ethiopian, Mediterranean, Cuban, Jamaican, Italian, diner and more.

What a view
Last night, I met up with a college friend for her birthday happy hour. After we left the bar, we went to the roof of a building where her friends work. It’s right off the National Mall and had excellent views of the Capitol and Washington monument.

A Billy Goat in D.C. … and still no luck for the Cubs

Last week, I realized the Billy Goat Tavern near my office, which a few co-workers had mentioned, is related to the original one in Chicago. However, upon visiting it Friday, I realized the comments I had found on the Internet were true — the D.C. version is a bit different from the original. Most notably, it’s cleaner and brighter. Lucky for me, it still serves cheap food and beer, plus is very close to work, so I give it a thumbs up.
