Not “Miserable” at all – except for the heat

I saw “Les Miserables,” the last Muny show of the season, tonight and felt it was an appropriate occasion to write a few sentences. The show was great. I was able to bear the HOT weather (today’s high was supposed to be over 100 and as I write this at midnight, it’s 84 degrees with a heat index of 89) to sit through this almost-three-hour show.

The whole show was great, so it’s hard to pick out favorites. I continue to like Eponine and her song “On My Own.” Jean Valjean’s “Bring Him Home” was great, as usual. The St. Louis boy who played Gavroche was outstanding with a great voice and command of the role. And the group numbers were rousing.

What I’ve heard about the show that makes it extra special:
- The cast was inflated from 80-some to more than 100 to allow for bigger crowd scenes (and sound) on the Muny’s huge stage.
- Since leaving Broadway and then ending its tour last year, the show has been licensed to only a handful of theaters. The Muny is one of them.
- The cast performed in that 100-degree heat for the past week with stage lights on them.
- At least five of the main characters were played by actors/actresses who had already performed those roles on Broadway.
- The cast included big stars and St. Louis natives Ken Page and Simone.

Ready to work

We had two designers leave work in the last week. (Both had gotten jobs elsewhere.) And a third one has a baby coming in the near future. As a result, I will be working some overtime shifts in the coming month. That’s less time for excitement and topics for writing.

Calming kitten?
Griffin is almost 6 months old now. I can’t say he’s grown much calmer yet, but everyone says it will happen eventually. He likes to carry his toys around from room to room (especially his stuffed bear or a squishy ball). He also has an unfortunate fascination with the kitchen counter, though he’s getting slightly beter about not jumping up there. At the moment, he’s asleep on my lap — one of the rare times he’s very easy to deal with. I have some new pictures from weeks ago, but I still have to take them off my camera.

Peter Pan
I saw “Peter Pan” at the Muny last night. I wasn’t overly excited about the show in the first place, and it didn’t go far beyond my expectations. It was cute and entertaining, but “Peter Pan” just doesn’t match up to some of the other shows. I’m really excited to see “The Pajama Game” next weekend. I just read an article that said they’re using Fosse’s original choreography for “Steam Heat.” I can’t wait!

The Muny, Part I

We’re almost halfway through the season at the Muny (the outdoor theater in St. Louis). My thoughts on the first three performances:

1) Oklahoma: I really enjoyed this show. The one part that was a bit drawn out was the dream sequence. It was a lot of dancing (which I usually love), but it just wasn’t very exciting. And it went on and on. Other than that, the show was great.

2) Grease: I hate to say this was my least favorite thus far. The movie is one of my favorites, and I think that makes it hard to enjoy the musical, which has some differences. This is the second time I had seen the musical (the first was at the Fox Theatre years ago), and both times I’ve been less impressed with it than I thought I would be. The music was great, and the show was done well. But the storyline and show just doesn’t cut it.

3) Hello Dolly: This has been my favorite of the season so far. I had seen the movie, but I had never seen the show in person. The actresses who played Dolly and Millie did an especially good job. And the numbers with the whole company were great.
