The Great Outdoors

I had a great weekend outdoors.

A couple of my friends are leaving in two weeks to travel the world for seven months — ending with a move to California. So to celebrate their last weeks on the East Coast, they invited a bunch of friends to a cabin in Shenandoah National Park. We spent the weekend playing games, grilling, canoeing on the river and finishing a keg. And the weather cooperated pretty well, too.

When I got back to D.C. on Sunday, the weather was excellent still. So I spent a couple of hours at Meridian Hill Park. A drum circle plays there almost every Sunday, so I checked that out. The drumming had drawn quite a crowd, including dancers, jugglers, a yoga class (well, maybe they weren’t drawn by the drumming) and plenty of people just hanging out. I watched for a while, then took my blanket to one of the hills and read for a bit with some drumming in the background.

Furnished!

In a flurry of ordering Sunday, I bought the remaining pieces I had been eyeing on Amazon to fill in my new apartment. Everything arrived in a very speedy fashion. So after a few grueling nights of assembling furniture, I’m calling the apartment “complete.” (I also purchased my window a/c unit today, which actually makes it complete because I wasn’t going to survive a D.C. summer without a/c.)

Today I did some grocery store visits. Haha. Actually, it’s kind of true. I drove to the Columbia Heights shopping area to get my a/c and stopped at the Giant grocery store there. Then, I took a stroll and had Mexican food on a sidewalk table for lunch. On the way back, I looped past Adams Morgan and confirmed the location of the Harris Teeter, which is my closest full-service grocery store. It’s fairly close, and I was overjoyed when I actually compared prices that it isn’t overly expensive. Plus, it has a free parking garage. I now have three grocery store discount cards, too, and I can take my pick of stores.

I took the route home through Meridian Hill Park, which was full of people having picnics and playing sports (even bocce) in the beautiful weather.

Now, I have to prepare for a rather exciting event tonight. Well, exciting by my standards. I’m going to a pre-party for White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The event itself is known as “nerd prom.” A bunch of journalists, a bunch of celebrities and Obama. (Basically news organizations buy tables and then invite celebs and members of Congress.) I, however, will not be at the dinner. But my company is hosting one of the pre-parties, so I do have an invitation to that. We’ll see if I spot anyone famous. (Identifying celebrities is not my strong suit.)

(If you want to see the full array of apartment pictures, you can see them here.)

Awhile back, I was searching for hazelnut extract so I could make some Ferrero Rocher cupcakes that sounded delicious. Today, I ran across some in the organic market near my new apartment. Score!

Ferrero Rocher cupcakes are in my future (and that of my co-workers)!

Starting to have a life again

For the past month and a half, I haven’t had time to do much socializing. I’ve been spending my time dealing with apartments and India.

So, it was nice to finally see some of my friends this weekend. Friday night, I went to the debut of DC Brau, the first brewery in D.C. in 60 years. They had their pale ale available at Meridian Pint, a great beer bar that is not too far from where I live now.

Saturday night, I had more beer for beer club! We tasted about four different IPAs. It’s not my favorite style of beer, but the small quantities were tasty.

In between, I participated in a day of service. Of course, our project was outdoors and it was raining, so I was soaked even though we stopped work early.

I also did some serious cleaning at my old apartment, then brought my vacuum and other cleaning supplies to my new place. Now I’m more or less done with it (I have to remove a bookcase for Goodwill when my parents come with their larger vehicle), but I have two more weeks to hang on to it (or turn in my keys).

The new place is feeling more complete. I moved around a couple kitchen shelves for better space. And I re-organized my bookcase (a new one that I got from some friends). The final product is good, although I need to get rid of seven books to have a perfect fit. And I need to buy some more bottles of wine to take advantage of the wine rack at the top (instead of filling it with overflow books).

Green space

I live half a block from this park, Meridian Hill. It is definitely a hill. The first half of the park is this tiered waterfall area with stepped pathways leading up. From the top of that (or from the street next to my apartment), you can see the top of the Washington Monument. (The park is a great place from which to view the Fourth of July fireworks.) The back half of the park is a flatter area with paths, benches and grassy areas.

I took a stroll through there in the nice weather after work this evening. I also explored a bit in the other direction, walking to Dupont Circle and back. I’m really loving my location.

Tonight, I organized my closets. The good news: Everything more or less fits! I’m lacking a tiny bit of space in the kitchen, which I hope to fix when I buy a shelf or cabinet for my microwave. Otherwise, almost everything is in its (general) place. Other than cookbooks (which are waiting for that extra shelf space) and half a box of picture frames (which are waiting for me to hang them), my boxes are empty. Woo-hoo!

I still have things to re-organize and a few more things to purchase before I’ll be “done,” but at least my place is easily livable now.

A home for shoes

Because my closet space changed in my move, I pre-emptively bought a shoe rack for the door of my closet. It works perfectly and holds 36 pairs of shoes. (I promise this is pretty much every shoe I own, though it still sounds like a lot.)

Just one of the many storage solutions that have been perfect for my space.

I worked a half day today. I took the bus to get there, and I took the metro home. On my walk from the metro, I realized just how many temptations I have to pass by each night. Restaurants of every sort. Bars. Liquor stores. Even an ice cream store. (OK, I gave in and checked out a nice one that had a good beer and wine selection. I ended up with SummerBright from Breckenridge Brewery.)

Moved!

I’m officially in my new place. Bookstore Movers moved my stuff today. (The poorly composed, blurry photo above is my place just after everything was moved in. STACKS of boxes!) I also got my Internet hooked up here and moved my cats in the afternoon. Then, I unpacked and broke down 35 boxes, which someone from Craigslist picked up tonight. So I’m even able to see parts of the floor now!

Everything is working out well so far. My furniture fit a little better than I thought it would, so that was nice. Tomorrow’s challenge will be setting up my TV/stereo/speakers/DVD/VCR. And I hope to get some groceries, too, before I go in for my half day of work.

The new ‘hood

With all my packing, I haven’t had time to write a sufficient India post, but I wanted to throw in a small post to say I am still around! My apartment is more or less packed. And today I took a load of stuff (glass tabletops, bulletin boards, some hanging clothes) to my new apartment. I also picked up a bookcase and lamp that I got from some friends who are moving and selling most all their furniture.

So my new place now has a lamp, a bookcase and a pantry (which I bought and assembled last weekend). I even bought and added magnetic latches to my pantry to make it super-cat-proof. (I’m learning to be quite handy with tools.)

I also finally decided on a setup for my furniture in the new place that seems to work and that I’m happy with, so I labeled where the movers should put everything. (Let’s hope I still like it with the actual furniture in place since it’ll be difficult for me to move things around on my own.)

And, while I was spending the afternoon in the new neighborhood, I took a quick stroll out for lunch. I had read about Fast Gourmet on the Prince of Petworth blog and knew it was close by — only about a block away! It really is an odd place. It’s in a gas station, but it has a very cafe feel and even had a TV showing a soccer game. I got my food to go, but they have a number of tables. (Perhaps I should have eaten there since the one thing I didn’t bring to my new place yet is a chair or anything to sit on.) And my turkey sandwich and fries were delicious! Warm with good meat and veggies and delicious bread. Plus, they’re open late every night and basically all night on Friday and Saturday.

Don’t believe me? The restaurant also has glowing reviews on Urban Spoon, DC Dining, Yelp, Washington City Paper and more.

This could be dangerous for my budget!
